A little bit about our new home – since 1858, Spencer has been the economic and social hub for central West Virginia. While businesses and industry have fluctuated over the decades, the city remains a beautiful pastoral setting and center of health, commerce, culture, and activity for the region.
Among the attractions in Spencer are a variety of historic buildings, a museum, a working oil derrick, a one-room schoolhouse, a winery, Robey Theatre – which is the longest continuously operating theatre in the country – and an iron forge. What Spencer may be best known for, however, is the annual West Virginia Black Walnut Festival.
Being held this year, October 13th through 16th, the Black Walnut Festival, is “much more than just a bunch of nuts.” It includes a Grand Parade with marching bands, floats, and antique tractors and a Kids’ Day Parade. The Festival also features a carnival with dozens of games and rides for children and adults, live street music, a 5K Nut Run and Walk, flea market, flower show, arts and craft booths, a quilt show and contest, a classic car show, and livestock displays.
